Interview Ryan Zell - ANTICHRIST SIEGE MACHINE

From the rubble of hell itself, strings full of fire stand out under the command of this devastating representative of everything that the churches tell you is wrong, Ryan Zell, on the front line of fire, worthy representative of Bestial war metal, guitarist of the famous band ANTICHRIST SIEGE MACHINE that brings us violence, hate, rejection and extermination. 

Receive a cordial and hellish greeting from Witchhammer Fanzine and all its readers, first of all, I want to thank you for accepting this interview, for those who do not know you, introduce yourself, tell us a little about your musical career. 

R: Thanks for having me, I appreciate the amazing introduction. I’m often listed as RZ, currently only playing in ASM but I’ve been in many metal and punk bands over the years some playing bass and some just doing vocals but mostly on guitar. 

Currently a guitarist and one of the two founders of Antichrist Siege Machine, can you tell us about the influences that led to the creation of this sick band? That is to say, today you are one of the most representative bands of the genre. 

R: In the early days of the band I had just moved to Richmond and was playing bass in a crust band but wanted to be in a fast and more aggressive band again. My old Grindcore band in Florida played a show with Unsacred, another band SB was playing drums in years ago, so that’s how we initially met. We talked about doing a 5 song demo band and then never playing live (which quickly changed). Wanting the band to be in the spirit of bands like Revenge, Blasphemy, Bestial Warlust etc. but given our roots as in the punk and death metal scenes it kind of evolved into its own thing that wasn’t directly influenced by any one thing. 

Tell us what your relationship is like with drummer and vocalist Scott Bartley, to whom we also send our infernal hails. 

R: We’re like brothers, as I said before we started the band right after I moved to Richmond and haven’t relented on hammering out shows and records since. Playing in a band with only one other person for so long means we’re very locked in to what we’re playing both live and on recordings.  

ASM has a demonic execution, there is no doubt about that, tell us about what the musical composition is like, who is in charge of executing sound, lyrics, and art? 

R: The sound is a joint effort between us both at the same time, no matter what riff or drumming idea we bring to the table we end up molding it into our combined idea of what ASM sounds like. Lyrics is all SB, I pick up parts to learn both live and on recordings but have faith in him on his method and writing themes. The art is also a combine effort, we both can see work done by an artist and tell if they could execute the ideas we have in our vision, so far every artist we’ve worked with on commissions have crushed it.  

I understand that your lyrics and music in general talk about  Anti-Christianity, Satanism and War, tell us what inspires Ryan and ASM personally to create this; what message do they want to convey? 

R: The lyrical themes are heavily influenced by SB’s past as a child growing up in a heavily religious household in the south, realizing its fallacies, redirecting its poisonous messages back onto itself and the people who push that message. It’s more genuine when you’ve lived it and seen how it effects people you know, it gives the hatred towards it more gravity. 

Tell us about ASM's early Alliance with the renowned record label Stygian Black Hand. Did the label contact you or vice versa? And also tell us about your current label Profound Lore Records. How did this pact come about? 

R: SBH has been with us since the beginning, Jesse was approached by SB and given our first demo. He had enough faith in it to release our first EP and LP and we’ve kept Stygian as a part of us to currently release our albums via cassette. As for Profound Lore, we approached them and they were already aware of ASM and interested in working together from the start. Both labels are incredible and helped get the band to a place where we can tour often and be associated with bands we always have faith in. 

Exactly on July 20th you arrived in Bogotá, Colombia for a show at the “Bogotá Subterránea Fest”. Is this your first time visiting South America? Tell us about your expectations, whether they were right or not. 

R: That was our first time in South America, the most south we had played before that was Mexico City. It was an amazing fest obviously, so many incredible bands a lot of which I was seeing or hearing of for the first time. South America has such a high concentration of bands in black and death metal that are so incredible, you can tell they live and breath heavy metal. 

A personal question, and I know that many of the page's followers will also be wondering: what did you think of the city, the people, the gastronomy, the stay? Would you return to South America for a new show or simply to go on vacation? Any particular country you want to visit? 

R: The city was beautiful, we tried to have a few days before and after the fest to just see as much as we could. The food everywhere was amazing, the people we interacted with (mostly us fumbling through broken Spanish and them nodding patiently) were great, especially everyone associated with making the fest happen. After this we have our sights set on Brazil, we hope to line up a full tour at some point. 

ASM is in high demand, they have a great reception from the majority of fanatic fans of the genre around the world. Tell us about future shows, do you have any shows planned for the future? 

R: We’re about to start a tour in Europe with Ascended Dead, which we’re both very excited for. Our first European tour with Spirit Possession was such a great success so we’re happy to return. Other than that, nothing I’m at liberty to discuss just yet.  

Of all your shows, is there any memorable memory you have? Which band is the most significant one with which you have been able to share the stage? Tell us about it. 

R: Hard to pin down one moment but our recent shows with Emperor, flying in to Calgary and driving through an ice storm to play with Revenge in Edmonton, an entire tour with the legendary Demilich, but specifically the first show in Richmond which was outside in essentially a backyard patio. All very surreal experiences.  

Returning to the musical aspect, I want to congratulate your latest work “Vengeance of Eternal Fire”, the cover is a tremendous work of art, the lyrics are a fucking aberration and the sound is totally annihilating. How do you see the fans’ reception of this latest vomit spit out from hell and what other releases do you have planned for the future? 

R: It seems like people really enjoyed it, more importantly both me and SB are very proud of it. Currently we aren’t writing anything new, we have a pattern of writing a record completely in the span of a couple months, recording it, releasing it and touring on that record for a bit before trying to write more. Helps us focus on playing the songs we have more tight and aggressively and when it’s time to write we can just focus on that and not have to pause for touring or practicing.

R: I think that’s very relatable to most evil people.

Reciban un cordial e infernal saludo de parte de Witchhammer Fanzine y todos sus lectores, antes que nada quiero agradecerles por aceptar esta entrevista, para los que no los conocemos, preséntense, cuéntennos un poco de su carrera musical.

R: Gracias por invitarme, agradezco la increíble presentación. A menudo me mencionan como RZ. Actualmente solo toco en ASM, pero he estado en muchas bandas de metal y punk a lo largo de los años, algunas tocando el bajo y otras solo cantando, pero principalmente con la guitarra.

Actualmente guitarrista y uno de los dos fundadores de Antichrist Siege Machine, ¿nos puedes hablar de las influencias que llevaron a la creación de esta enfermiza banda? Es decir, hoy en día soN una de las bandas más representativas del género.

R: En los primeros días de la banda, me acababa de mudar a Richmond y tocaba el bajo en una banda crust, pero quería volver a estar en una banda rápida y más agresiva. Mi antigua banda de grindcore en Florida tocó en un concierto con Unsacred, otra banda en la que SB tocaba la batería hace años, así fue como nos conocimos inicialmente. Hablamos de hacer una banda de demostración de 5 canciones y luego no tocar nunca en vivo (lo que cambió rápidamente). Queríamos que la banda tuviera el espíritu de bandas como Revenge, Blasphemy, Bestial Warlust, etc., pero dadas nuestras raíces en las escenas punk y death metal, evolucionó hacia algo propio que no estaba directamente influenciado por nada en particular.

Cuéntanos cómo es tu relación con el baterista y vocalista Scott Bartley, a quien también enviamos nuestros saludos infernales.

R: Somos como hermanos, como dije antes, formamos la banda justo después de mudarme a Richmond y no hemos dejado de hacer shows y grabar discos desde entonces. Tocar en una banda con solo otra persona durante tanto tiempo significa que estamos muy concentrados en lo que tocamos, tanto en vivo como en las grabaciones. 

ASM tiene una ejecución demoníaca, de eso no hay duda, cuéntanos cómo es la composición musical, ¿quién se encarga de ejecutar el sonido, la letra y el arte?

R: El sonido es un esfuerzo conjunto entre ambos al mismo tiempo, sin importar qué riff o idea de batería traigamos a la mesa, terminamos moldeándolo en nuestra idea combinada de cómo suena ASM. Las letras son todas de SB, tomo partes para aprender tanto en vivo como en grabaciones, pero tengo fe en su método y en la composición de temas. El arte también es un esfuerzo combinado, ambos podemos ver el trabajo realizado por un artista y decir si podrían ejecutar las ideas que tenemos en nuestra visión, hasta ahora todos los artistas con los que hemos trabajado en encargos lo han logrado.

Entiendo que tus letras y tu música en general hablan sobre  el anticristianismo, el satanismo y la guerra, cuéntanos qué inspira personalmente a Ryan y a ASM a crear esto; ¿Qué mensaje quieren transmitir?

R: Los temas líricos están fuertemente influenciados por el pasado de SB, un niño que creció en un hogar profundamente religioso en el sur, que se dio cuenta de sus falacias y redirigió sus mensajes venenosos hacia sí mismo y hacia las personas que difunden ese mensaje. Es más genuino cuando lo has vivido y has visto cómo afecta a las personas que conoces, le da más gravedad al odio hacia él.

Háblanos de la alianza inicial de ASM con el reconocido sello discográfico Stygian Black Hand. ¿El sello se puso en contacto contigo o viceversa? Y cuéntanos también de tu sello actual, Profound Lore Records. ¿Cómo se produjo este pacto?

R: SBH ha estado con nosotros desde el principio. SB se acercó a Jesse y le dio nuestro primer demo. Tenía suficiente fe en él como para lanzar nuestro primer EP y LP y hemos mantenido a Stygian como parte de nosotros para lanzar actualmente nuestros álbumes en formato casete. En cuanto a Profound Lore, nos pusimos en contacto con ellos y ya conocían ASM y estaban interesados ​​en trabajar juntos desde el principio. Ambos sellos son increíbles y ayudaron a que la banda llegara a un punto en el que podemos hacer giras a menudo y estar asociados con bandas en las que siempre hemos tenido fe.

Exactamente el 20 de julio llegaste a Bogotá, Colombia para un show en el “Bogotá Subterránea Fest”. ¿Es esta tu primera vez visitando Sudamérica? Cuéntanos cuáles eran tus expectativas, si fueron acertadas o no.

R: Esa fue nuestra primera vez en Sudamérica. El lugar más al sur en el que habíamos tocado antes era Ciudad de México. Obviamente fue un festival increíble, había muchas bandas increíbles, muchas de las cuales veía o escuchaba por primera vez. Sudamérica tiene una concentración tan alta de bandas de black y death metal que son tan increíbles que se nota que viven y respiran heavy metal.

Una pregunta personal, y sé que muchos de los seguidores de la página también se estarán preguntando: ¿qué te pareció la ciudad, la gente, la gastronomía, la estadía? ¿Volverías a Sudamérica para un nuevo show o simplemente para ir de vacaciones? ¿Algún país en particular que quieras visitar?

R: La ciudad era hermosa, intentamos pasar unos días antes y después del festival para ver todo lo que pudiéramos. La comida en todas partes era increíble, la gente con la que interactuamos (en su mayoría, nosotros hablando mal en español y ellos asintiendo con paciencia) fue genial, especialmente todos los que participaron en la organización del festival. Después de esto, tenemos la vista puesta en Brasil y esperamos organizar una gira completa en algún momento.

ASM tiene una gran demanda, tienen una gran acogida por parte de la mayoría de los fanáticos del género en todo el mundo. Cuéntanos sobre los próximos shows, ¿tienes algún show planeado para el futuro?

R: Estamos a punto de comenzar una gira por Europa con Ascended Dead, algo que nos tiene muy emocionados a los dos. Nuestra primera gira europea con Spirit Possession fue todo un éxito, así que estamos felices de volver. Aparte de eso, no tengo libertad para comentar nada más por ahora. 

De todos tus shows, ¿hay algún recuerdo memorable que tengas? ¿Cuál es la banda más significativa con la que has podido compartir escenario? Cuéntanoslo.

R: Es difícil precisar un momento, pero nuestros últimos shows con Emperor, volar a Calgary y conducir a través de una tormenta de hielo para tocar con Revenge en Edmonton, una gira completa con el legendario Demilich, pero específicamente el primer show en Richmond, que fue al aire libre, en un patio trasero. Todas experiencias muy surrealistas. 

Volviendo al aspecto musical, quiero felicitaros por vuestro último trabajo “Vengeance of Eternal Fire”, la portada es una tremenda obra de arte, la letra es una puta aberración y el sonido es totalmente aniquilador. ¿Cómo veis la recepción de los fans de este último vómito escupido desde el infierno y qué otros lanzamientos tenéis previstos para el futuro?

R: Parece que a la gente le ha gustado mucho, y lo más importante es que tanto yo como SB estamos muy orgullosos de ello. Actualmente no estamos escribiendo nada nuevo, tenemos un patrón de escribir un disco completamente en el lapso de un par de meses, grabarlo, lanzarlo y salir de gira con ese disco durante un tiempo antes de intentar escribir más. Nos ayuda a concentrarnos en tocar las canciones que tenemos de forma más ajustada y agresiva y cuando llega el momento de escribir podemos centrarnos en eso y no tener que hacer una pausa para hacer una gira o ensayar.

“Lanzando blasfemias infames, esparcidas por todo el universo” ¿Cómo se correlaciona la entidad Ryan con la frase antes mencionada?

R: Creo que eso es algo con lo que la mayoría de la gente malvada se puede identificar.
